NJSC «Naftogaz of Ukraine» and European Union have discussed the issue of filling of Ukraine’s UGS with natural gas

Today the delegation of NJSC «Naftogaz of Ukraine» headed by the First deputy chairman of the board of the Company Igor Didenko has taken part at the meeting of the Coordinating Group of the European Union on the issues of gas in Brussels.
During the meeting the parties have examined current situation concerning filling of UGS of Ukraine with natural gas and the role of underground storage facilities in provision of reliable transit of Russian gas to the countries of Europe in autumnal and winter period. In the course of the negotiations the participants have reached the agreement that the issue of filling of UGS is common problem of the resource supplier and consumers of Ukraine and Europe.
The parties have examined two variants of solution of the issue of natural gas injection into UGS of Ukraine, in particular, (1) provision to Ukraine of the loan from the direction of the consortium of international financial institutions to the amount of approximately $4,2 billion; (2) purchase by the European companies of necessary volumes of natural gas for further storage in Ukrainian UGS. The parties have also not excluded the possibility of complex approach to the solution of the given question by means of aggregation of the abovementioned variants.
At the same time it should be noted that in case of injection and storage by European companies of certain volumes of gas to UGS of Ukraine (in case of implementation of this variant) the issues of technological and financial parameters of the modes of extraction of this gas and of the gas destined for the consumers of Ukraine require detailed agreement.
At the meeting of Coordinating Group of the European Union on the issues of gas also participated the representatives of OJSC «Gazprom». All parties during the discussion of the issues held constructive position.
Reference: Coordinating Group of the European Union on the issues of gas was created in 2006 in accordance with the provisions of the Directive 2004/67 for guaranteeing of the safety of natural gas supplies. The Group is headed by the European Commission, and it includes the representatives of respective institutions of the countries of the European Union, European organizations of gas sector and consumers. The meetings of the Group are held on a regular basis (at least 4 times a year) with the purpose of exchange of information concerning the situation in gas market of every country and elaboration of both short-term and long-term measures for guaranteeing of safety of gas supplies to the countries of the European Union.
