On 24 February, Naftogaz representatives attended the first meeting of the newly created EBA committee to address industrial ecology and sustainable development issues. The committee includes leading international and local companies operating in the metals, energy, construction and agricultural sectors of Ukraine. Representatives of central executive bodies and members of the relevant parliamentary committees will also participate in meetings on a regular basis.
The committee is intended to facilitate a constructive dialogue between the business community and public authorities to develop solutions aimed at both encouraging local production and minimizing negative environmental impact.
Key objectives of the committee include creating effective environmental tax models and methodology for monitoring and control of industrial pollution in line with Ukraine’s international commitments; encouraging utilization of industrial waste; implementing circular economy principles; and cutting industrial emissions of greenhouse gases.
“Naftogaz has consistently followed sustainable development principles. Each year, we increase investments in environmental safety significantly. The group budgeted UAH 400mn for these purposes in 2020. In general, the group’s environmental strategy covers responsible resource management, in particular control over water use and remediation of soils, cutting air emissions, supporting energy efficiency programs, and biodiversity projects. It is important for us to team up with like-minded people to find solutions to the most urgent environmental challenges,” commented Naftogaz group HSE Officer Vitaliy Zayets.
According to Ukrgasvydobuvannya Environment Manager Halyna Volkova, up to 20% of the company’s production facilities are operating in environmentally friendly mode. This share is constantly increasing. Ukrgasvydobuvannya has vast expertise in industrial waste utilization and is ready to contribute actively to the development of the relevant regulatory framework.
