Background information

During the nine months of 2015, Gazprom supplied 115.4 bcm of gas to Western, Central and Eastern Europe (including Turkey and Moldova, excluding Ukraine, Belarus, Finland and the Baltics). Of this amount, 48.4 bcm, or more than 40%, were transmitted through Ukraine.
The existing technical capacity for transmitting Russian gas in the direction of Western, Central and Eastern Europe (including Turkey and Moldova, excluding Ukraine, Belarus, Finland and the Baltics) was utilized by nearly 60% in the aggregate. The discussed expansion of the Nord Stream transmission route would increase the unutilized capacity by 1.5 times.
