Ukraine’s oil and gas industry is one of the oldest in the world

1771

Commercial development of oil began in the Sloboda-Runhurska field (Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast).

1820

Commercial development of oil began at the vicinity of Boryslav – the largest oil field in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

1853

The world’s first patent for the technology to derive kerosene from oil obtained in Lviv, which launched the development of the oil refining industry.

1858

Lviv gas plant enters service.

1877

Lviv hosts First Global Oil Congress.

1882

World’s first professional magazine “Hirnyk” (Ukrainian for “miner”) covering oil and gas industry subjects published in Lviv.

1912

First gas pipelines from Boryslav to Drohobych built to supply associated petroleum gas.

1921

1945

The world’s first interstate supplies of natural gas from Ukraine to Poland.

1948

The first main gas pipeline, at that time the most powerful in Europe, Dashava-Kyiv, enters operation.

1951

Extension of Dashava-Kyiv gas pipeline to Moscow. Natural gas supplies from Ukraine to Russia begin.

1956

Shebelynske gas field put into commercial production. During almost two decades of operation, it is the largest in Europe in terms of gas reserves and production level.

1960

Ukraine’s first Shebelynka Gas Processing Plant put into operation.

1964

Ukraine’s first underground gas storage, Olyshivske, began operation.

1967

Commenced natural gas export to Czechoslovakia that launched the development of export gas supplies to Central and Western Ukraine across Ukraine.

1971

Holitsynske gas condensate field discovered, the first in the Black Sea offshore zone.

1972

Achieved maximum level of oil and condensate production in Ukraine of 14.5 million tons.

1975

Achieved maximum level of natural gas production in Ukraine of 68.7 bcm.

1978

Put into operation Soyuz, the first transcontinental gas pipeline.

1981

Sakhalin oil and gas condensate field was opened in Kharkiv region.

For the first time in Europe, the technology of the cycling process was introduced at the Novotroitsk gas condensate field.

1983

One of the world’s largest underground gas storages, Bilche-Volytske, enters operation. Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhhorod gas pipeline enters operation.

1986

Kursk-Kyiv, Kremenchuk-Ananyiv and Ananyiv-Tiraspol-Izmail enter operation. Commenced natural gas injection into Proletarske UGS.

1987

Odeske gas field discovered in the Black Sea. Yelets-Kremenchuk-Kryvyi Rih, Kursk-Kyiv, and Novopskov-Shebelynka gas pipelines enter operation. Commenced natural gas injection into Solokhivske and Verhunske UGSs. Commenced gas exports to Turkey.

1988

Progres and Ananyiv-Chernivtsi-Bohorodchany gas pipelines enter operation. Began gas injection into Kehychivske UGS. Commenced gas exports to Switzerland.

1990

Achieved maximum level of natural gas usage in Ukraine of 118.8 bcm.

1991

Novodaryivka-Amvrosiyivka gas pipeline enters operation. Cycling process plant in Tymofiyivske gas-condensate field enters operation.
