Naftogaz continues to enforce recovery of $1.4 billion international arbitral award from Gazprom

Naftogaz continues to enforce the recovery of over $1.4 billion from the Russian company Gazprom awarded by international arbitration. The company is utilising every legal mechanism available in various jurisdictions including Kazakhstan.
Gazprom’s debt continues to accrue until the arbitration award is enforced in full. Interest on the debt increases daily.

Despite the ruling of the Astana International Financial Centre Court on 7 July to revoke the previously issued authorisation for enforcement on the grounds of lack of jurisdiction, Naftogaz is continuing the procedure for the recognition and enforcement of the arbitral award in Kazakhstan.

The company is consistently pursuing its international campaign to recover the debt owed by Gazprom, utilising every legal instrument available. Measures to enforce the arbitral award are already underway in several countries, and new legal proceedings are being prepared.

On 15 May 2026, the Astana International Financial Centre Court recognised the arbitral award of 16 June 2025 and granted authorisation for its enforcement. This ruling obliges Gazprom to pay Naftogaz over $1.4 billion in arrears for natural gas transportation organisation services, as well as interest and arbitration costs.

In accordance with the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On the Astana International Financial Centre”, final rulings of the AIFC Court are enforceable in Kazakhstan as rulings of national courts. However, on 25 May 2026, the Minister of Justice of Kazakhstan stated, for unknown reasons, that this ruling would not be enforced in Kazakhstan.
