“Naftogaz of Ukraine” and Ferrostaal (Germany) have signed the Memorandum of understanding on modernization of gas-pumping equipment for “Soyuz” gas pipeline.

Today, on July 2, 2012, National Joint-Stock Company “Naftogaz of Ukraine” and Ferrostaal Industrieanlagen GmbH (Germany) signed a Memorandum of understanding regarding the modernization of equipment at the Bar gas compressor station of “Soyuz” gas pipeline (Vinnytsia region). The Memorandum was signed in “Naftogaz of Ukraine” central office by the Deputy Chairman of the Board Vadym Chuprun and the Managing Director of Ferrostaal Marc Neumann
The goal of the reconstruction project is to extend the life of the station's gas turbines and gas compressors for 15 years, to reduce the consumption of fuel gas by gas turbines by about 28% when operating at full capacity and to increase the efficiency of gas compressors.
After the Memorandum was signed Vadym Chuprun indicated: “The Company constantly works on Ukrainian gas transportation system reconstruction. Last year we started works on gas pipeline “Urengoy-Ponary-Uzhgorod”, today together with Ferrostaal we have launched the pilot project on gas-pumping equipment modernization of “Soyuz” gas pipeline. “Naftogaz of Ukraine” top priority is to ensure the safety and security of the operation of Ukrainian gas transportation system. It is now clear that among all of the current options for natural gas supplies to Europe, Ukrainian gas transportation system is the most cost-effective".
Marc Neumann noted that German technical experts were ready to start working on the project immediately after signing of the Memorandum, and described this project as beneficial to both parties.
Reference.
Gas pipeline "Soyuz" (Orenburg-State Border) was built in the USSR in 1975-78 together with Bulgaria, Hungary, GDR, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Project capacity of the pipeline is 26 billion cubic meters per year, pressure 7.5 MPa, its length on the territory of Ukraine - 1568.5 km. 12 compressor stations are located on the gas pipeline. Pipeline compressor station Bar of "Soyuz" was built in 1979. It has 7 gas pumping units with total capacity of 70 thousand kW.
Gas transportation system of Ukraine consists of 39.8 thousand km of pipelines, including 14 thousand km with diameter of 1020-1420 mm, 74 compressor stations (112 compressor workshops) with total capacity 5450 MW and 13 underground gas storage facilities with working capacity of 32 bcm. The input capacity of the system is 288 bcm per year, and its output capacity is 178.5 bcm per year. It is technically possible to increase gas transit to Central and Western Europe up to 142 bcm without any technical modernization of the gas transportation system.
