NJSC “Naftogaz of Ukraine” is not responsible for the interruption of Russian natural gas supplies to EU

NJSC “Naftogaz of Ukraine” expresses its astonishment to the statement made by the Chairman of Gazprom JSC Mr Alexei Miller who has advised EU countries considering themselves to have been suffering from the interruption of Russian gas supplies via Ukraine to take legal actions against Ukraine.

NJSC “Naftogaz of Ukraine” believes it is intolerable to pass over the responsibility for the interruption of gas supplies from Russia onto Ukraine as a transiting country which has not impeded the transit of Russian gas for European consumers.

Thus, the company believes that Gazprom JSC shall be held fully responsible for the current situation.

As it has been early reported, despite the fact that there is currently no valid contract with Gazprom JSC for the transport of natural gas via Ukraine for the year 2009 as well as in view of considerable economical and psychological pressure from the Russian side, Ukraine has transited to the European consumers, through Ukrainian Gas Transmission System (GTS), for the period of 6 days of January, 1435.9 million c. m of Russian gas. The company has used 52 million c. m of gas for Ukraine’s GTS technological needs, which fully corresponds to the volumes pumped into Ukraine’s GTS during aforesaid period – 1488.2 million c. m.

Furthermore, it should be reminded that in order to ensure reliable operation of pumping stations for the transportation of Russian natural gas through Ukraine, it is imperative to use 21 million c. m of gas per day or 126 million c. m of gas for the period of 6 days.

Thus, it can be stated that Ukraine, during 6 days of January 2009, has transited to European consumers 74 million c. m of gas from its own resources.
