Naftogaz Group ramps up seismic exploration in western Ukraine with 230 km² of new 3D surveys

Ukrgasvydobuvannya, a subsidiary of Naftogaz Group, will conduct 3D seismic surveys across 230 km² in western Ukraine, Naftogaz Group CEO Sergii Koretskyi has announced.

Amid the ongoing full-scale war with Russia and shelling of key energy infrastructure, production in western Ukraine has emerged as a strategic pillar of the country’s energy security.

For years, this region was overlooked due to depleted deposits and was deemed less promising than eastern Ukraine. But advances in seismic technology are changing that. We can now detect gas more accurately in formations previously regarded as non‑commercial. We expect these new surveys will enable us to commence drilling in 2026–2027," commented Koretskyi.

Between 2019 and 2023, the company processed approximately 1,600 km² of 3D seismic data in western Ukraine, leading to the spudding of over 10 new wells. Four of them achieved initial gas flow rates of between 80,000 and 270,000 m³/day—a significant result in a region where gas production began in 1912.

Over the past five years, Ukrgasvydobuvannya has added about 2.4 bcm to its reserves in the region.
