Naftogaz Welcomes Mandatory Sanctions against Nord Stream 2 Approved by US Congress

Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC is grateful to the United States Congress for passing a provision that imposes mandatory sanctions on those legal entities and individuals dealing with the planning, construction, and operation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline

This provision has been introduced among Congress amendments to the US defense budget.

“Ukraine’s position has been endorsed by the United States House of Representatives. It is now the turn of the Senate. I would like to thank everyone who fights against Nord Stream 2 and the use of natural gas by the Putin regime as a weapon against Ukraine and Europe as a whole. Let’s conntinue our common efforts to maintain the pressure,” commented Yuriy Vitrenko, Chairman of the Naftogaz Executive Board.

In January 2021, the Biden Administration introduced a waiver to sanctions legislation for the Nord Stream 2 operator, referring to national security. At the same time, Ukraine and a number of partner countries see this sanctions relief as a mistake because the commercial launch of Nord Stream 2 poses a real threat to the energy security of Europe and, more specifically, Ukraine. The pipeline undermines European solidarity, facilitates the export of corruption, and contravenes US national interests and the interests of the entire free world.
