Yuriy Vitrenko: US Congress can stop Nord Stream 2 through additional sanctions

Additional sanctions that are currently being considered by the US Congress can stop the Nord Stream 2 project even at its present stage, Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC CEO Yuriy Vitrenko has told Bloomberg

Additional sanctions that are currently being considered by the US Congress can stop the Nord Stream 2 project even at its present stage, Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC CEO Yuriy Vitrenko has told Bloomberg.

“There is still a chance the pipeline could be stopped by US sanctions if additional measures are passed through both chambers,” he said.

Yuriy Vitrenko emphasized that US and EU actions regarding the Kremlin’s geopolitical project are a test of the West's commitment to its own principles. “The completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline would be a victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin and a blow to American credibility in Eastern Europe,” the Naftogaz CEO noted.

He added that the completion of the pipeline would pave the way for a dramatic escalation in Russian military aggression inside Ukraine, as the Kremlin's current reliance on gas transit through Ukraine serves as a deterrent to a full-scale war.

“The worst-case scenario is not just that Ukraine would lose a significant part of the country's current GDP. The completion of the pipeline greatly increases the chances of a major war in Eastern Europe,” Yuriy Vitrenko commented.
